Alex’s Song

Where does a body go

After it’s gone?

Where does a body go

To know when it’s done?

If you see it buried in the ground

Is that where it remains?

Where does a body go when it has no one

To be?

Will I ever see my friend again?

Will I ever see my friend?

Where does a body go when it’s out of style

So obsolete

Does it begin again, moving through the land

Til it’s grass at our feet?

And where does a body from

In the first place? Does it come from the earth?

Or maybe from a brightly dying star

Somewhere far in the Universe?

Oooo

Will I ever see my friend again?

Will I ever see my friend?

It’s a complicated, perfect mess

An animated organism…so complex.

Then suddenly it stops. Seemingly still

But it’s slowly breaking down into trillions of atoms.

And those atoms make the soil,

And that soil makes a tree

And that tree makes the fruit

For a mother to be

And that mother feeds the child.

A brand new body.

What is taken is given

Equally unto thee.

Even as we are living, we are dying, being born into something new.

Everything you see used to be a being just like you.

Don’t be a fool to believe that you’ve done it all by yourself

You’d never even exist if it weren’t for everything else

All the things that make up me are the things that make up you.

Everything we can perceive is made up of that too.

There is nothing that isn’t me. There is nothing that isn’t you.

No, nothing stands between us except the thought we choose.
